Edinburg’s newest citizen is here! Gianna Claire Hall arrived at 7:45 last night. Dad and Mom (Thomas and Katie) are doing well. I could feel the collective sigh of relief from many as soon as “Bumma” Ruth called to let everyone know. Gianna weighed in at 8 lbs and was 20 ½ inches long. She is a cutie and a definite “keeper” according to TJ nd Katie. We are so happy for all of you.
This is one of the very, very few drawbacks; or, on the other hand, a very, very big plus of living in a very, very small community. Little Gianna not only belongs to TJ and Katie; but, somehow we, the community, feels she partly belongs to us also. We all have kept a close “eye” on Katie’s pregnancy and bombarded her with questions constantly. Thank you Katie for letting us all be a part of your journey these last 9 months.
Last Saturday Trinity WELCA held their annual Fall Festival. Soup and sandwiches were served along with a bake sale. Quilts from the quilting group were for sale also. What a wonderful response we have each year. This year was fantastic. It was the perfect autumn day-just the kind one would want for eating homemade vegetable beef soup. Loretta Monson and her crew of ladies did a superb job in the food category. Turkey, ham and egg salad buns are the sandwiches of the day. Egg salad seems to be the favorite year after year. Tables were laden with homemade baking; lots of homemade breads along with cookies, bars, pickles and preserves. It was a wonderful day.
We have been experiencing cold, rainy weather these last few days. The forecast calls for more of the same. We could also see a few of those white flakes in the next couple of days. This is not the best weather for the sugar beet harvest. Greg Hall told me they had to pull some of their beet trucks with tractors as the fields were just too wet and muddy. I know the highways have mud on them from the trucks. Signs along the roads warn of slippery roads due to mud. O well, this is just another sign that winter is not far away.
Fighting Sioux hockey starts this coming week-end. UND plays Merrimack College. Mike Spanier is a huge hockey fan. He has season tickets so I suppose we will see him on the Jumbotron lots. Mike and his son Eric and Eric’s little boy were highlighted quite a few times last year. I got an email from Les Jensen saying he was coming up to visit Ed Laxdal the weekend of the 15th and 16th and they would be attending the games. We have plans to meet and visit between periods. This is the series with the Minnesota Gophers so UND will really be hopping that weekend.
Vera Brandvold left yesterday for Spain. She accompanied her sister Verna. I hope she has a great time and sees many sights over there. She said she also has a chance to go to Germany for the ChristKindle Markets which are held in many towns and villages the end of November in to December. I told her she should go and we will meet up for roasted chestnuts in Nuremberg. I am very excited about going to the ChristKindle Markets. It is a very special time of the year.
Sara Sorbo had a great report from Mayo. Cancer seems to have said good-by to her. That is wonderful. By the way, Sara is a candidate for homecoming queen at Concordia. How wonderful is that? Congratulations Sara!!!!
I visited with Mary Seim and she said Everett was getting stronger every day. That is good news. We wish him a speedy recovery. Sympathy goes to the family of Thelma Johnson. She was 100 years old and had been living at the Good Samaritan Center for the past few years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
